A procedure routinely performed by Dr. Poulos and Dr. Gallez on patients with a history of active periodontal disease. Most forms of Periodontal Disease are caused by bacteria that do not require oxygen to survive. These non-oxygen bacteria called “Anaerobic Bacteria” do live deep inside periodontal pockets. Samples will be gently collected from your gums using sterile paper and sent to a university lab where they are grown, and identified by DNA testing. Sensitivity tests are done to determine which antibiotic is capable of killing the bacteria grown and identified from your gums. Unless 100% of these anaerobic bacteria are destroyed, your periodontal disease will not be cured!
As we mature many of us experience gum recession. Today, we are able to use advances in tissue materials to add gum tissue in places where is is needed. Thanks to advances in materials such as Alloderm & BioCover.
Alloderm was originally designed for burn victims to replace lost skin tissue. Now, periodontists use Alloderm to rebuild lost gum tissue.
In the past tissue had to be taken from the palate for gum grafting, leaving a wound site from the procedure, which caused discomfort. Today, acellular dermal grafting from secondary sources, not the palate, enable periodontists ample tissue for grafting without a second wound site, tremendously decreasing the post-surgical discomfort. Acellular dermal grafting also allows for an exact color blend between surrounding and grafted tissues.
Since tissue is not being removed from the roof of the mouth during acellular dermal grafting:
The regenerative approach. The aim of periodontal treatment is the re-establishment of a full functional attachment. This is best achieved through regeneration.
The development of Straumann® Emdogain is based on a breakthrough in the knowledge of the basic biology of tooth development, enamel matrix proteins, a complex of native proteins that play a key role in the development of tooth-supporting tissues.
Comprised of various proteins, which self-assemble to create this matrix, Straumann Emdogain mediates the formation of cementum on the root of the developing tooth, providing a foundation for all necessary tissues associated with a true functional attachment.
By mimicking the biological processes of natural tooth development, Straumann® Emdogain forms an insoluble three dimensional extra-cellular matrix. This matrix remains on the root surface for 2-4 weeks and allows for the selective colonization, proliferation and differentiation of cells.
Recent advances in aesthetic dentistry, such as porcelain veneers, have resulted in techniques that can correct poorly shaped or discolored teeth. Smiles can be rejuvenated with minimally invasive techniques. In this age of cosmetic awareness, porcelain veneers are one way to enhance and rejuvenate a patient’s smile.
The aesthetic conscious dentist who will help you design your new smile is also aware of the necessity to have the gum tissue in harmony with the teeth. Minimally invasive periodontal procedures, such as crown lengthening, are sometimes required to create the desired length of teeth so the ideal shape, form, and symmetry can be obtained.
Dr. Poulos and Dr. Gallez work with many great dentists experienced in cosmetic dentistry.
Comments:
Before Treatment – Short teeth, "Gummy Smile". Tetracycline stain/spaces between the teeth.
Comments:
After Treatment – Cosmetic crown lengthening/Porcelain veneers by patient's general dentist. Teeth now normal size and shape, and natural in appearance.
