Top 10 Reasons to Use Sedation Dentistry

  1. Fear or anxiety is preventing you from getting the dental treatment you need.

Neglecting dental care can have negative effects on our health and damage self-confidence. Our smiles and our faces are a reflection of who we are and embarrassment over an unhealthy smile can have a negative impact on our relationships, career advancement and the overall feeling of well being that each of us treasures. Your smile can and should reflect the healthy, vibrant person you were meant to be. Oral Conscious Sedation may be the treatment option that opens that door for you.
  2. Dr. Poulos is specially trained in the management of oral conscious sedation.

Dr. Poulos is a dental specialist who earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Indiana University School of Dentistry, and completed a rigorous two-year surgical residency in Periodontics at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine which qualified him to practice as a specialist.   Dr. Poulos founded and directs the San Jose Study Club; an organization affiliated with the Seattle Study Club dedicated to continuing education for dentists. He has completed advanced training in Oral Conscious Sedation.
  3. You need to complete treatment in as few appointments as possible.

Everyone is busy with careers, family and community obligations. Our schedules can be very tight.  If you need to complete complex treatment or just want to take care of several needs at once, Oral Conscious Sedation can provide the relaxation that allows for a significant amount of treatment to be completed in just a visit or two.
  4. Jaw joint of face pain makes treatment difficult for you.

Patients with TMJD and other chronic oral problems often experience difficulty even during the most routine appointments. Oral Conscious Sedation medications act as effective muscle relaxants and have proven to be extremely successful in allowing for treatment to be completed comfortably with little or no pain during and after appointments.
  5. It is difficult to open your mouth for care.

Patients with TMJD, smaller mouths and other chronic oral problems may experience difficulty during routine appointments. Oral Conscious Sedation medications can help relax muscles and are often extremely successful in allowing for treatment to be completed comfortably with little or no pain during or after appointments.
  6. Your gag response interferes with treatment.

Some people have more sensitive gag responses than others.  Often, the more some try to avoid a gag, the worse the experience becomes.  Oral Conscious Sedation medications relax the back of the throat and help control the tightening that accompanies the fear of gagging. We have successfully treated many patients with a history of sensitive gag response.
  7. Past dental experiences were unpleasant, or even traumatic.

Sedation practices can create selective memory for patients.  Most sedation patients vaguely recall any negative sounds, sights or smells. Patients repeatedly report having a pleasant, safe experience, and feel well-cared for.
  8. Being relaxed during dental treatment is attractive to you.

Our sedation protocols include medications that are taken orally in pill form, or by I.V. anesthesia.  During your treatment, we monitor blood pressure, oxygen intake and heart rate for your safety.  If you select I.V. anesthesia, Dr. Lam, our Physician-Anesthesiologist, is by your side through out the appointment to monitor your vital signs and medication levels.
  9. Our practice space was designed for patient privacy and comfort.

We understand that for some, dental visits are simply an uncomfortable experience.   Dr. Poulos’ desire to make treatment as comfortable as possible for all of our patients inspired the design of our office.  Each treatment suite ensures privacy for our patients.  When our patients choose a sedation option, they can rest assured that they will be treated in a private and safe space.

Additionally, our practice facility is ADA approved with wheel chair parking and easy elevator access to our office.
  10. Our excellent care team understands dental anxiety and treats each patient with dignity, compassion and warmth.

We understand that having dental care is not an easy choice for everyone.  Just researching this website takes courage, and picking up the phone to call can take even more.  We approach each patient’s needs with compassion, understanding and confidentiality.  We never judge patients or question fear.  Your success in achieving oral health is our success.  We consider ourselves your partners in health and care.
