Oral Conscious Sedation

Dr. Poulos & Dr. Gallez are experts in sedation periodontics. Dr. Poulos has completed rigorous, post-doctoral training during his residency at the University of Connecticut, with Doctors for Oral Conscious Sedation, and is Oral Conscious Sedation (OCS) certified.

With OCS, a pill is taken about an hour before treatment, making the patient feel relaxed and somewhat sleepy. Upon arrival, our Periodontal team takes great care of the patient, assessing response to the medication. If additional medication is needed, we administer it at the practice.

Before treatment begins, our care team makes certain the OCS patient is comfortable and ready to move forward with treatment. During treatment, most patients fall into a “dozing” state, but remain responsive enough to answer our questions. Throughout the process, our care team monitors blood pressure, oxygen intake and heart rate. Once treatment is complete, a specially trained care team member stays with the patient until he or she is alert and ready to go home with a companion.
